Chimneys should be swept once a year; if you have a back boiler which you use all year round it should be swept every 6 months. This is to remove soot, blockages and build-up of creosote, tar and resins from your chimney liner, firebox, smoke chamber and damper. Creosote, tar and resins are highly flammable substances that build up in your chimney; poor burning practices can cause these to accumulate at much higher levels, if not swept it can lead to chimney fires and is a risk to you and your family’s health. Having your chimney swept may also be a condition of your house insurance policy.

When burning wood it is advisable to use seasoned wood, this is essentially drying the wood and reducing the moisture content to approximately 15 - 20%, using a moisture meter to assist measurement is a good idea. It is essential that you have carbon monoxide alarm fitted in your home. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas which is produced when fuels that contain carbon, such as wood, coal and natural gas, burn incompletely. It occurs when the fuel is burnt without enough oxygen present. Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless and tasteless gas which can cause death, it is known as the “silent killer” and can only be detected by the use of a carbon monoxide alarm.

5 Star offer a comprehensive chimney sweeping service to residential property owners. Cleanliness is one of our priorities, using protective covers to ensure that the fire area and house remain clean, we sweep open fires, log burners and multi-fuel burning stoves, Agas and Rayburns. We use power or traditional brush sweeping as required by the type of chimney.

We also offer the following services:

  • Cowl fitment

  • Removal of birds nests

  • Advice

  • Provide carbon monoxide alarms

  • Provide moisture meters

  • Provide magnetic thermostats

Once a sweep is complete, we undertake a smoke test to ensure the appliance, flue pipe and chimney are all working correctly.
