There are three main reasons as to why you should consider having a chimney cowl fitted. A cowl will prevent birds from nesting in your chimney as well as prevent or other small animals from falling into the chimney, which causes blockages. Having a chimney cowl fitted will also stop rain from entering your chimney which prevents damp to the chimney and walls. Where you have a stove fitted, rain entering the chimney flue system may over time lead to problems with rust in your stove. Having a chimney cowl fitted can prevent this.
The final reason to have a chimney cowl fitted is to reduce downdrafts and smoke from your living room, these are known as anti-downdraft cowls, made especially for the purpose of preventing downdrafts. Downdrafts can send cold air down your chimney pot and into the room also sending smoke into the room.
