Why fit a Chimney Cowl / Bird Guard?

There are three main reasons as to why you should consider having a chimney cowl fitted. A cowl will prevent birds from nesting in your chimney as well as prevent or other small animals from falling into the chimney, which causes blockages. This is important as any obstruction to the chimney can cause carbon monoxide to build up in the house, the normal route of escape is up and out of the chimney.

This video demonstrates an extreme blockage which built up over many years

Having a chimney cowl fitted will also stop rain from entering your chimney which prevents damp to the chimney and walls. Where you have a stove fitted, rain entering the chimney flue system may over time lead to problems with rust in your stove. Having a chimney cowl fitted can prevent this.

The final reason to have a chimney cowl fitted is to reduce downdrafts and smoke from your living room, these are known as anti-downdraft cowls, made especially for the purpose of preventing downdrafts. Downdrafts can send cold air down your chimney pot and into the room also sending smoke into the room.

At 5 Star Gutter cleaning and Chimney Sweeping Services Ltd, we only fit stainless steel cowls, which are powder coated to match the colour of your chimney pot. These are more durable and long lasting than aluminium which can be prone to disintegrate over a short period of time. Whilst stainless steel cowls are not the cheapest, we believe that they are better value for money in the long term. It is important to choose the right cowl to suit your needs.
